a sunny afternoon at oakwood beach with amanda janes jones + her littles

while in chicago a couple weeks ago, i had the chance to meet up with the lovely, amanda jane jones and her littles at their favorite beach in south side.

amanda is a very talented freelance graphic designer and the founding art director of kinfolk (& also grew up in kansas!)

i had the chance to ask her a couple of questions about motherhood -

- what does motherhood mean to you? unconditional love

- your mantra or quote you live by? I know it's a popular one right now but we have "work hard and be kind" on our letter board as a constant reminder that hard work pays off and that you'll never regret being kind.

- favorite clothier brands for mama: Ace and Jig, Elizabeth Suzann, Doen for the kids: Babaa Knitwear, Misha and Puff, Mabo, Ira Loves Mae, Alice and Ames, Zuzii, Fawn Shoppe

- what advice do you have for mama's? you know your children better than anyone else. Follow your gut, and never pass up cuddles.

it was definitely a day to remember - the kids ran straight for the water, poor miles was stung by a bee and the sun was so so bright and sparkly. all of that said, i feel as though i took a different approach to this session and i really love how it turned out.

meet amanda, miles & jane .

the morning i spent in fayetteville, ar with nico and her youngest, maribell .

oh, where to begin. . . .

magic. vulnerability. light. joy. motherhood.

a few choice words to describe this beautiful session with my friend, nico + her daughter, maribell. the shoot took place at her home in fayetteville, arkansas. i have been following nico for quite awhile on instagram and have always admired her grace, compassion and love for her children. i felt as if i was being called to document her maternal nature and relationship with her three littles. since the boys were at school, i ended up spending the morning getting to know nico and maribell.

i asked nico her favorite part about motherhood -

"i love the personal growth and self acceptance that has come along in the humbling process of becoming a mother and parenting children. i love that being a mother offers insight to just what it might have been like for my own parents and it’s truly wonderful to get an idea of just how much I was loved as a child."

before we made our way to her bedroom to start shooting, nico put "the wild reeds" on vinyl and i watched as maribell danced through the living room--it's always such a joy to see children react to music.

it was an honor to photograph nico and her little babe and i need to thank nico for allowing me to create amazing, honest, beautiful work - she wasn't afraid and that really set the tone for the entire morning and i created some of my best work when it comes to celebrating a mother/daughter relationship.

truly one of my favorite motherhood sessions to date.

"just keep swimming."

a tuesday in minnesota with mama bird, kari and her three loves - kendi, kaia + klo .

as you may know, motherhood shoots are some of my favorite to photograph. i was in minnesota with my guy, visiting family and got a message from kari. i asked if i could document this season in their lives for a bit. a mini in-home shoot.

when i got there, her girls could see me through the glass door and were smiling, but also wondering who i was. as kari and i were getting to know each other in real time (we've been following one another on instagram for quite some time), they were coming into the kitchen, tapping my shoulder or poking my side and running away. this is how i knew it was going to be a true glimpse into their lives.

we spent a good thirty minutes up in their loft room that was pouring with the most beautiful light. if i'm being honest, this wasn't a perfect shoot; but once looking through them, i realized, i was too busy watching them live to correct it. turns out,  i like the messy, the real, the unknown - those beautiful in-between moments that end up being the most powerful.

kari and her husband, aaron have this mantra that really resonated with me.

"we do not remember days, we remember moments."

here are a few moments with kari and her three littles, kaia, kendi + klo .

cheri, at 31 weeks in columbia, mo .

a few weeks back, i photographed cheri and her growing belly at her home in columbia, mo. we ended up finding a forest of green and an abandoned barn not far from their home.

she sent me a photo saying, "baby, odin decided to come early. thought you might like to see who was hanging out in there."

congratulations, you two.

the morning i spent with maria and her sweet son, asher .

on this particular morning, i spent a little time with my dear friend, maria and her son, asher. it wasn't a long time, but it was a very special time. a time where i was able to see the bond between a mother and son.

they jumped carelessly on his bed, listened to their favorite record, ran in their backyard, baked cookies in the kitchen and danced around barefoot.

i have so much love for the casteels and know you will too, just by watching them be .
