joshua tree motherhood session

in april, we traveled back to one of my favorite places, joshua tree, ca. we stayed in a cozy airbnb about 20 min from the park called, casa panorama joshua tree. while there, we hiked a bit, went to the unbelievable restaurant in flamingo heights, la copine (it's a must!) and i was also able to book a motherhood shoot with the gorgeous, rhi and her son, louie.

rhiannon drove all the way from san diego to shoot with me and i am so thankful. we started in the airbnb and made our way outside to shoot around the property. i've been wanting to photograph her ever since i stumbled upon her instagram many many months ago. so glad it worked out this trip.

can't handle her beauty. . .

or squishy baby bums.

green dirt farm visual diary

back in may, i photographed a beautiful visual diary at green dirt farm in weston, mo.

the diary was inspired by scenes of summer, femininity, lush greens and beautiful pieces from one of my favorites, shop doen.

i had a talented group of women alongside me who made this editorial come to life -- styling + muah: lynn magelli, model: julia zukus, videography: gold hairpin films and location: green dirt farm.

also, brace yourselves for the teeny tiny baby sheep! i had never seen a black and white spotted sheep until this shoot and they were so fun to work with.

below you'll see a short film that keera created for this shoot and it's absolutely magical - shot all on 8mm film.

palm springs lovers session

i met up with these two babes in palm springs back in april and documented their wild love.

i had been wanting to work with them for awhile and was so happy we were able to meet up. it was an instant friendship, bonding over travel, adventure and sharing wedding stories. i had been following their beautiful work for some time so it was nice to spend real time with them.

"this is our love, there is no in between."

roller hockey lovers session

a few weeks ago, i taught a mentor session with the lovely, haley sieben.

she wanted to get out of her comfort zone, to experiment and really get comfortable with a couple whom she's shooting. so we did just that.

i was able to work with one of my favorite couples, bitti + isaac who are always down for anything. last time i photographed them was in an abandoned pool so I knew they'd be the perfect couple to use for an adventurous, experimental mentor session.

they have this crazy connection that comes out so well in photographs. not to mention, they are both crazy attractive.

here they are, being themselves (goofy, serious, intimate, fresh, weird, all of it) in a roller hockey rink in kansas.

a moody lovers session with josh + hannah at smithville lake

kicked off my mentorships earlier this year and they are off to a great start! i am so excited to teach other creatives and share my knowledge, tips, tricks and also allow them to watch my process.

for gage's one on one, we took josh and hannah out to smithville lake for a lovers session. these two were so fun to work with and were adventurous enough to brave the shift in weather - about halfway through the shoot, the wind picked up and the sky went dark which made for some beautiful moody, twilight shots. we also had them hop in the water at the end of the shoot.

happy wedding month, you two!

ymca camp campbell wedding

where do i begin?

katie and andrew are two of the kindest souls you'll meet. i was so lucky to document this day and i am happy to get this wedding out into the world.

it was moody, outdoorsy, imperfect, wes anderson inspired and about halfway through we found the most magical patch of trees with this heavenly golden light just highlighting this forest beautifully. we parked the car, katie put on her tennis shoes and we booked it.

a huge thank you to my gal, sara for second shooting this with me.

a rainy afternoon at home with the harman's in grant park

back in january, i was invited into rebecca's beautiful 106 year old home to photograph her and her family.

i asked rebecca her favorite part about being a mother -

"it's such a challenging question - i love seeing their personalities develop. my heart swells with happiness when i see them treat those in their life (and each other) with kindness and observing their special bond as brothers."

a morning spent with the harrison family in their treehouse bedroom in roswell, georgia

i've been excited to share this family session ever since i left their home. they have a beautiful space that they have created and i had the joy of documenting this season for them back in january.

as always, i asked what chelsea's favorite part about motherhood is -

"my favorite thing about motherhood is that it's shown me strength i didn't know i had. childbirth, breastfeeding and parenting are much harder than anything i've done before. and yet somehow, i keep making it through. i feel like after this, i could handle anything."

meet sam, chelsea and their little, luc river.

a cozy morning with the wears family

a cozy morning with the wears family

last month, i spent some time with this sweet family in their home. josh and monique are part of a small church community and they both sing and play in the worship band - beautifully i might add. while monique was making me coffee, i could hear josh singing in his office and asked if he'd play for me while i photographed. that's where this shoot begins.

before sharing their world with you, i always ask mama's their favorite part of motherhood and what mantra they choose to live by -

"my favorite part of motherhood is how it is constantly changing me. in dark days my kids bring light. when i fall terribly short of ideal, my kids are so forgiving.  their love has changed me just as much as my love forms and changes them.

so i love that these boys in their curious, wild, needy, joyful, disobedient, dancing, and loving selves call me up and remind me of something greater that i'm living for. - motherhood is so much about giving, so you are constantly confronted with choosing selfishness or selflessness. even when you fail you will still be presented with the opportunity to change and be selfless as well. that is such a gift."

as for the mantra -

"well i have a quote that i have repeated over and over to myself over the years.  it reminds me that living for yourself keeps you narrow minded and without -

do not resent your place in the story. do not imagine yourself elsewhere. do not close your eyes and picture a world without thorns, without shadows, without hawks. change this world. use your body like a tool meant to be used up, discarded, and replaced, our comfort is not the goal in this life. "

motherhood can be very uncomfortable at times, days can be hard but it helps me to remember even on hard days my life is forming other human lives.  sacrifice is powerful.  sometimes mom’s resent when they are unable to to what they want,  but Galatians says to “use your freedom to serve one another in love; “  i have freedom to serve in love and this changes me and them.  that is pretty wonderful.

photographing this family was a complete honor for me - not only is mo a natural beauty, she is full of love, light and wisdom. you'll see this come out in the photos.

meet the wears family - josh, monique, jayden + siah .
